In 1983, FDA issued guidelines that recommended that sexually active gay and bisexual men with multiple partners should not donate blood.

In 1986, the FDA issued federal regulations that banned all gay men from donating blood.

On August 7th 2023, the FDA and American Red Cross changed their guidelines that once restricted the LGBTQIA+ community from donating to now welcoming the community to giving blood in support of their fellow humans.

Since our first blood drive was able to save more than 100 lives, we have partnered again for our second blood drive! On February 6th, 2026, River City Pride will be partnering with the American Red Cross to host the second LGBTQIA+ Blood Drive. Proving that our community DOES show up and will support our neighbors, our loved ones, and those in need.
